What does Joshua 9:1 mean?
When the various kings and peoples living in Canaan heard that Joshua's army had crossed the Jordan River and begun conquering the land, they realized they faced a serious threat. Rather than uniting against Israel, most of these regional leaders chose to act independently, which would ultimately work against them. This verse sets up the moment when the Gibeonites, one of these groups, made a fateful decision to deceive Joshua into making a peace treaty with them instead of fighting. It's a reminder of how fear and fragmentation can lead people to make choices in desperation, sometimes with consequences they didn't anticipate.
