What does Joshua 8:23 mean?

The king of Ai represented the last stronghold of resistance in that city, so his capture was the turning point that broke the people's will to fight further. After Israel's initial failed attack on Ai (due to hidden sin in their camp), this successful second assault vindicated God's promise and Joshua's leadership. Bringing the king alive to Joshua, rather than killing him on the spot, gave Joshua the authority to decide the king's fate and allowed the victory to be presented fully to the people as God's doing. In that culture, capturing an enemy leader alive was seen as a complete triumph, not just militarily but symbolically, showing that God had delivered true victory into their hands.
