Joshua 8:20

When the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way. The people who fled to the wilderness turned back on the pursuers.

What does Joshua 8:20 mean?

The Israelites had set up an ambush at Ai, and when the men of the city turned around and saw their own city burning behind them, they realized they were trapped. Panic replaced their confidence, and they found themselves caught between the advancing Israeli forces in front and the knowledge that their home was being destroyed behind them. In that moment of shock and confusion, the people who had been running away into the wilderness turned around and joined the fight, changing the battle's momentum completely. This captures how quickly circumstances can shift when people lose their sense of security and hope, and how courage can return when people stand together.
