Joshua 7:2
“Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth Aven, on the east side of Bethel, and spoke to them, saying, “Go up and spy out the land.” The men went up and spied out Ai.”
What does Joshua 7:2 mean?
Joshua is doing what seems perfectly reasonable: he's sending scouts to check out the next city they plan to attack, just as they did before Jericho. What makes this moment tragic is that Joshua hasn't consulted God this time around. The Israelites are riding high on their miraculous victory at Jericho, and confidence has replaced seeking guidance. This sets up one of the Bible's hardest stories. Joshua doesn't know that someone in the camp has disobeyed God's command not to take anything from Jericho, and that hidden sin will sabotage the entire army when they attack Ai. The reconnaissance mission itself isn't wrong, but it reflects a spiritual carelessness that leaves them vulnerable. Sometimes our biggest stumbles come not from doing obviously bad things, but from moving forward without checking in with God, especially after a season of blessing when we might feel most secure.
