Joshua 6:17
“The city shall be devoted, even it and all that is in it, to Yahweh. Only Rahab the prostitute shall live, she and all who are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.”
What does Joshua 6:17 mean?
This verse records Joshua's instruction about what will happen when Jericho falls, and it highlights something remarkable about God's mercy. While the entire city and everything in it will be destroyed as an act of war and judgment, there's a notable exception: Rahab and everyone sheltering in her house will be spared because she chose to protect the Israelite spies at great personal risk. What makes this powerful is that Rahab wasn't an Israelite, wasn't part of God's covenant people, and by the standards of her own society, she was marginalized. Yet her act of faith and kindness toward strangers put her in a position to receive grace. Her story suggests that God sees and honors courage and compassion, even in unlikely people, and that choosing to stand with what's right can literally change the course of your life. She becomes one of the few individuals specifically named as surviving Jericho, and later she's woven into Jesus's own family line, showing that God doesn't forget those who trust him.
