“For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, until all the nation, even the men of war who came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they didn’t listen to Yahweh’s voice. Yahweh swore to them that he wouldn’t let them see the land which Yahweh swore to their fathers that he would give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.”
What does Joshua 5:6 mean?
The Israelites wandered the desert for forty years because an entire generation refused to trust God's promise that they could take the land ahead of them. When they first arrived at Canaan's border, they listened to fearful reports about powerful enemies and decided the task was impossible, despite God's assurance that he would fight for them. This refusal to believe God's word had consequences: that generation never entered the promised land, and only their children eventually would. This teaches us something sobering about what happens when we persistently turn away from what God tells us, even when his promises are real and his track record is proven. At the same time, the passage shows God's faithfulness didn't disappear with that generation's failure, the next generation still received what he'd sworn to give.
