Joshua 3:4
“Yet there shall be a space between you and it of about two thousand cubits by measure—don’t come closer to it—that you may know the way by which you must go; for you have not passed this way before.””
What does Joshua 3:4 mean?
God was telling the Israelites to keep their distance from the Ark of the Covenant as they crossed the Jordan River, maintaining a gap of about half a mile so they could see it leading them forward. This wasn't about God being distant or cold, but practical: by keeping space between themselves and the Ark, the people could actually see and follow where it was going, rather than clustering so close they'd lose sight of it entirely. The instruction acknowledges something deeply human, that we're walking into unknown territory and need to be able to see the way ahead. Sometimes stepping back a little, rather than pressing desperately close, is exactly what helps us recognize God's guidance in our lives.
