Joshua 24:7
“When they cried out to Yahweh, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea on them, and covered them; and your eyes saw what I did in Egypt. You lived in the wilderness many days.”
What does Joshua 24:7 mean?
Joshua is reminding the Israelites of their exodus from Egypt, when God literally came between them and their pursuers by creating darkness and then drowning Pharaoh's army in the sea. He's saying, "You saw this with your own eyes, your community witnessed God's rescue firsthand," which is why he can confidently appeal to their memory and gratitude. The point is that they've already experienced God's faithfulness in the most dramatic way possible, so they should remember this as they face whatever comes next. This speech happens after forty years of wilderness wandering, so Joshua is essentially saying: you've already survived the impossible with God's help, so trust him now as you enter the promised land.
