Joshua 23:7
“that you not come among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow down yourselves to them;”
What does Joshua 23:7 mean?
Joshua is speaking to the Israelites as they're about to settle the land, urging them to stay separate from the pagan nations around them and avoid adopting their religious practices. The warning isn't just about outright idol worship, but about the smaller steps that lead there: simply speaking the names of false gods, swearing by them, or showing them respect through bowing. This reflects something true in all our lives: spiritual drift often happens gradually, through small compromises rather than sudden collapse. Joshua saw that casual familiarity with other beliefs could slowly weaken the people's faith and commitment. Today, the principle still speaks to us about guarding what we prioritize and being intentional about the influences we invite into our hearts and homes, especially during seasons when our faith feels fragile.
