Joshua 23:12
““But if you do at all go back, and hold fast to the remnant of these nations, even these who remain among you, and make marriages with them, and go in to them, and they to you;”
What does Joshua 23:12 mean?
Joshua is warning the Israelites about a real danger they'll face: staying comfortable among the pagan nations around them, intermarrying, and gradually adopting their ways. The phrase "go back" doesn't mean physically returning somewhere, but rather slipping backward spiritually, letting go of their commitment to follow God alone. The concern here is about slow erosion rather than sudden collapse. When people build deep personal ties with those whose values differ fundamentally from theirs, compromise becomes easier and almost invisible. Joshua is essentially saying: watch out for the creeping drift that happens when you're surrounded by alternatives to God's path, especially when those alternatives come wrapped in family bonds and daily intimacy. This still speaks to people today navigating relationships with those who don't share their faith or values. It's not about condemning such relationships outright, but rather recognizing that without intention and boundaries, we can gradually adopt the worldview of those closest to us, sometimes without even noticing it's happened.
