Joshua 22:3
“You have not left your brothers these many days to this day, but have performed the duty of the commandment of Yahweh your God.”
What does Joshua 22:3 mean?
Joshua is speaking to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh, who have just completed a long military campaign alongside the other Israelites. He's acknowledging their faithfulness, noting that they stuck with their brothers through the entire conquest of Canaan rather than returning home early to their own territories on the east side of the Jordan River. His words recognize that keeping commitments, especially when it requires personal sacrifice and delayed gratification, is itself a form of obedience to God. There's something deeply affirming in being seen and honored for showing up and following through, which speaks to how meaningful our faithfulness in relationships and responsibilities truly is.
