What does Joshua 21:37 mean?

In the years after Israel entered the promised land, the Levites (the priestly tribe) needed places to live and work scattered throughout the nation. This verse is part of a lengthy list documenting exactly which cities were given to different Levite families, ensuring they had homes and pastureland while they served the people spiritually and taught God's law. Kedemoth and Mephaath were two such cities given to the Levites in the territory of Reuben, east of the Jordan River. While the names mean little to us today, they represent God's practical care for those set apart for his service, making sure his priests weren't left without provision. It's a reminder that when we commit ourselves to serving God and others, he thinks about the real, everyday needs we'll face along the way.
