Joshua 20:6
“He shall dwell in that city until he stands before the congregation for judgment, until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days. Then the man slayer shall return, and come to his own city, and to his own house, to the city he fled from.’””
What does Joshua 20:6 mean?
In ancient Israel, a person who killed someone unintentionally could flee to one of these special cities of refuge and be protected from revenge. This verse explains that the person would stay there safely until two things happened: first, they'd have a fair trial before the community leaders, and second, the current high priest would die. Once the high priest died, the person was free to go home without fear of being hunted down by the victim's family seeking payback. This system protected people from the cycle of endless revenge while still holding them accountable. It recognized the difference between murder and accidental killing, offering mercy without erasing justice. For someone who'd caused a death through no real fault of their own, this offered both safety and eventually the chance to rebuild their life.
