Joshua 2:14
“The men said to her, “Our life for yours, if you don’t talk about this business of ours; and it shall be, when Yahweh gives us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with you.””
What does Joshua 2:14 mean?
The spies made Rahab a promise: they would protect her life in exchange for her silence about their mission, and when Israel conquered the land, they would treat her and her family with loyalty and genuine kindness. This was a covenant between people in desperate circumstances, sealed by mutual trust. Rahab had risked everything to hide these men from her own king, and they recognized that her courage deserved their protection and gratitude. The promise "our life for yours" meant they would stake their own safety on keeping her safe, a serious oath in that culture. Later in the story, we see this promise kept faithfully, which is why Rahab becomes one of the few inhabitants of Jericho spared from destruction.
