Joshua 18:8
“The men arose and went. Joshua commanded those who went to survey the land, saying, “Go walk through the land, survey it, and come again to me. I will cast lots for you here before Yahweh in Shiloh.””
What does Joshua 18:8 mean?
Joshua is sending out scouts to map the remaining territory that hasn't yet been divided among the Israelite tribes. After years of conquest, there's still work to do in fairly distributing the land, and Joshua wants detailed information before making those decisions. What's striking here is Joshua's promise to cast lots "before Yahweh"—he's not just dividing land arbitrarily or by politics, but inviting God into the process. For people in that community, casting lots was how you let God guide an important decision rather than letting human preference take over. Joshua is essentially saying, "Go do the hard work of surveying, and then we'll let God direct how this gets settled," which reassured people that the distribution would be fair and blessed. This speaks to something many of us need: the willingness to do our part (the men's careful surveying) while also trusting that God is involved in outcomes we can't control. We prepare, we work, we gather what we need—and then we bring it before God rather than grasping for the result we want.
