Joshua 17:18
“but the hill country shall be yours. Although it is a forest, you shall cut it down, and it’s farthest extent shall be yours; for you shall drive out the Canaanites, though they have chariots of iron, and though they are strong.””
What does Joshua 17:18 mean?
Joshua is telling the tribe of Joseph that while their assigned territory includes forested hill country (which sounds less appealing than flat, ready-made land), it's still genuinely theirs to claim. The promise isn't that the work will be easy, but that their effort to clear and develop the land, combined with God's help, will overcome even the Canaanites' military advantages like iron chariots and strength. This speaks to something many of us experience: sometimes what we're given requires hard work and faith to become valuable. The "hill country" might feel like less than we hoped for, but it's real, it's ours, and it's workable. God doesn't guarantee a frictionless path, but he does guarantee that faithful effort isn't wasted.
