“Beth Peor, the slopes of Pisgah, Beth Jeshimoth,”
What does Joshua 13:20 mean?
This verse is simply a list of towns and geographical landmarks in the territory that Moses was distributing to the tribe of Reuben. Beth Peor was located near Mount Peor, a significant place where Israel had earlier committed idolatry (Numbers 25), and the slopes of Pisgah refer to the ridge of mountains from which Moses viewed the promised land before his death. These place names might seem like dry geography, but they remind us that God's promises were concrete and specific, not vague or abstract. Even in the detailed work of dividing up land, we can see that God cares about particulars and follows through on what he has said.
