What does Joshua 12:8 mean?
This verse is simply listing the different regions and peoples that Joshua and the Israelites conquered as they entered the land God had promised them. Instead of giving detailed battle stories, the writer is summarizing: they defeated enemies across every kind of terrain, from mountains to valleys to desert areas, showing that God's promise covered the entire land. The names of the different groups (Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, and others) represent all the peoples who lived there before Israel arrived. What might feel like a dry inventory to us actually would have meant everything to the original readers, confirming that God kept his word in concrete, measurable ways.
