“but don’t stay there. Pursue your enemies, and attack them from the rear. Don’t allow them to enter into their cities; for Yahweh your God has delivered them into your hand.””
What does Joshua 10:19 mean?
Joshua and the Israelites are in the thick of battle, having just witnessed the miraculous moment when God made the sun stand still to give them more daylight for fighting. This instruction comes as the enemy is fleeing and scattering, and the temptation might be to stop, catch their breath, and celebrate. But Joshua pushes them forward, recognizing that hesitation could let their defeated opponents regroup and fortify themselves behind city walls, undoing the victory God has just given them. Beyond the military strategy, there's something about momentum and decisiveness here that speaks to spiritual battles too. When God opens a door or removes an obstacle, sometimes the next faithful step is to keep moving forward rather than pause at the threshold. The command assumes the victory is already won ("Yahweh your God has delivered them into your hand"), so the remaining work is simply following through on what's already been secured.
