Joshua 1:9
“Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go.””
What does Joshua 1:9 mean?
God speaks these words to Joshua right after Moses dies, when Joshua inherits the overwhelming responsibility of leading Israel into the promised land. Joshua is about to face military battles, skeptical people, and the weight of following in Moses' enormous footsteps, so this command isn't casual cheerleading, it's a steadying anchor. The repetition matters here, God isn't just saying "be brave" once. By commanding it three times in different ways (be strong, don't fear, don't be dismayed), God is acknowledging that courage isn't something we naturally feel when facing the impossible. It's a choice we make and remake. The reason Joshua can make that choice isn't his own strength but God's promise of presence, which appears as the foundation of everything else God says. When you're standing at your own kind of threshold, uncertain and afraid, this verse offers the same anchor: you're not being asked to manufacture confidence from nowhere, but to trust that God genuinely shows up in the hard places you're walking into.
