Jonah 4:7
“But God prepared a worm at dawn the next day, and it chewed on the vine, so that it withered.”
What does Jonah 4:7 mean?
After Jonah preached to Nineveh and watched the entire city repent, he sat outside the city angry and bitter. God made a vine grow up to give him shade from the harsh sun, and Jonah was grateful for it. But then God sent a worm to destroy the vine, leaving Jonah exposed and miserable again. This moment is the turning point of the whole book. God is teaching Jonah a lesson through his own experience: Jonah cared deeply about a plant that existed for just one day, yet he was furious that God showed mercy to thousands of people in Nineveh. The withered vine forces Jonah (and us) to confront how small our compassion can be compared to God's, and how our anger often protects our pride rather than serving justice or righteousness. It's a gentle but firm invitation to expand our hearts.
