“Shouldn’t I be concerned for Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than one hundred twenty thousand persons who can’t discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much livestock?””
What does Jonah 4:11 mean?
God's compassion here stretches far beyond what Jonah expected or wanted. By mentioning people who can't tell their right hand from their left, God is referring to children and perhaps those with limited understanding, emphasizing the vulnerability and innocence of Nineveh's population. The point isn't that these people are foolish, but that they're spiritually unprepared and morally confused—they genuinely don't know better. God is gently confronting Jonah's anger by reminding him that a great city full of people (along with their animals, who depend on them) matters to God, even if they're enemies of Israel. After Jonah demanded judgment and felt cheated by mercy, God's response essentially asks: "How can you expect me not to care about all these lives?"
