What does Jonah 4:1 mean?
Jonah has just watched God show mercy to Nineveh, the brutal enemy nation he'd been sent to warn. Instead of rejoicing at this grace, Jonah is furious, and his anger cuts deep. His reaction reveals something we might not expect: he'd actually hoped God would destroy Nineveh, not save it. What makes this moment so human and honest is that Jonah doesn't hide his disappointment from God or from us. He's angry at God's kindness itself, which seems backwards until we realize how personal this is for him. Sometimes we're most upset when God does the right thing instead of the thing we wanted. This verse invites us to notice those moments in ourselves, when grace frustrates us because it's not the judgment we were counting on.
