What does Jonah 1:9 mean?
Jonah is cornered by the ship's crew during a terrible storm, and when they demand to know who he is and what he's done, he gives this answer. What's striking is that Jonah claims to fear God, the maker of all things, even as he's actively running away from God's direct command to preach in Nineveh. He's not lying about his faith, but his actions tell a different story. This moment captures the painful disconnect between what we believe and what we're willing to do, something many of us recognize in ourselves. Sometimes we confess our trust in God while we're simultaneously trying to hide from what he's asking of us.
