“So the ship master came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God! Maybe your God will notice us, so that we won’t perish.””
What does Jonah 1:6 mean?
The ship's captain finds Jonah sleeping through a terrifying storm and is understandably frustrated. He wakes Jonah urgently, telling him to pray, because even a pagan sea captain recognizes that desperate situations call for divine help. There's something poignant here: while Jonah is literally running from God, everyone around him is turning toward theirs. The captain's words reveal how precarious life feels in crisis, when any prayer seems worth attempting, and also hint at Jonah's spiritual disconnection, since he's the one person on that ship who should know God best yet he's the one asleep. This moment becomes a turning point that eventually leads to Jonah's own reckoning with the God he's been avoiding.
