What does Jonah 1:2 mean?

God is calling Jonah to deliver a message of warning to Nineveh, one of the ancient world's most powerful cities. The people there have become deeply corrupt, and God wants them to know their actions haven't gone unnoticed. This isn't a comfortable assignment, and the story that follows shows us why Jonah will struggle with it: Nineveh was Israel's enemy, and he may have feared they wouldn't listen or that God might actually forgive them if they repented. The verse reminds us that God cares about all people and their choices, even those we might consider our enemies, and sometimes God calls us to speak truth in difficult situations rather than look away.
