Most certainly, I tell you, if a person keeps my word, he will never see death.”

What does John 8:51 mean?

Jesus is making a promise that goes deeper than our earthly lifespan. He's speaking about spiritual death, separation from God, which many understood as the ultimate consequence of sin. When he says that keeping his word protects us from death, he means that living according to his teachings—with love, forgiveness, and trust in God—connects us to eternal life with God, something that death cannot take away. This doesn't mean followers of Jesus won't experience physical death; it means that death loses its power to be the final word. For those who hold onto Jesus' teachings and walk in relationship with him, there's continuity beyond this life. It's an invitation to find security not in avoiding death, but in being held by something (or someone) that transcends it.
