What does John 8:4 mean?

The religious leaders have just dragged a woman before Jesus, catching her in the act of adultery. They're presenting her as evidence of sin, ready to condemn her according to the law. What's striking is that they mention only the woman, not the man involved, which hints at how easily power gets wielded unfairly against the vulnerable. In this moment, Jesus is being tested: will he side with the law, or will he show mercy?
