What does John 7:35 mean?

The Jewish leaders are puzzled and frustrated by Jesus's claim that he'll be going somewhere they can't follow him. Their confused speculation reveals they're thinking in purely earthly terms, imagining he might travel to communities of Jewish people scattered throughout the Greek world (the Dispersion). They're almost mockingly asking whether he plans to become a missionary to non-Jewish people, which would have seemed absurd to them at that moment. What makes this moment poignant is that the leaders have no idea how prophetic their words actually are. Jesus will indeed reach far beyond the Jewish communities they're envisioning, and his message will spread to Greeks and people of every nation, though not in the way any of them expected. Their skepticism becomes a window into how blind they were to what God was actually about to do through him.
