What does John 7:33 mean?

Jesus is telling his disciples that his time on earth is running out, and soon he'll return to God the Father. He's speaking near the end of his ministry, when opposition against him is growing and his crucifixion is approaching. What matters in his words is the comfort hidden beneath the goodbye: even though he's leaving them, he's going back to his Father, which means he's returning to where he belongs and where his work will continue in a deeper way. For anyone reading this who feels abandoned or knows what it's like to watch someone you love slip away, Jesus is being honest about the limits of his earthly presence while also pointing to something bigger, his reunion with God. The message is that endings aren't the final word, and distance doesn't mean disconnection from purpose or love.
