John 7:28
“Jesus therefore cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, “You both know me, and know where I am from. I have not come of myself, but he who sent me is true, whom you don’t know.”
What does John 7:28 mean?
Jesus is speaking directly to people who think they understand who he is, but he's pointing out a crucial gap in their knowledge. They know his name and his hometown (Nazareth), yet they're missing the deepest truth: that God the Father sent him with a real mission and purpose. There's something almost frustrating in his words, as if he's saying, "You're looking at me but seeing only the surface." He's challenging them to recognize that his authority and identity don't come from himself alone, but from the one who truly sent him, the authentic God whom they claim to follow but actually don't truly know. It's an invitation hidden in a rebuke, asking his listeners to go deeper than surface-level familiarity.
