John 7:24
“Don’t judge according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment.””
What does John 7:24 mean?
Jesus isn't telling us to stop evaluating anything at all, but to look deeper than first impressions. He's speaking to people who were quick to condemn him based on surface-level observations, without considering the fuller context or his actual character and intentions. When we judge by appearance alone, we often get things wrong. A person might seem confident but be deeply insecure, or seem cold but be protecting a wounded heart. Jesus invites us to do the harder work of understanding the whole story. Righteous judgment means asking honest questions, considering what we don't know, and extending the same grace to others that we'd hope to receive ourselves.
