John 6:31
“Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness. As it is written, ‘He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.’””
What does John 6:31 mean?
The crowd Jesus is speaking to is reminding him of Israel's wilderness journey, when God miraculously provided manna (bread-like food) for forty years. They're pointing to this as evidence that God can and does provide physical nourishment in impossible situations. What they don't yet understand is that Jesus is about to tell them he himself is the "bread from heaven" they're really hungry for, spiritual sustenance that lasts forever. The manna was real and necessary, but it only satisfied them temporarily, day after day. Jesus is inviting them to consider what their deepest hunger actually is and where true satisfaction comes from.
