John 5:6
“When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had been sick for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to be made well?””
What does John 5:6 mean?
Jesus asks a question that might seem obvious, yet it cuts to something real and sometimes complicated. After thirty-eight years of illness, this man's condition had become his whole life, his identity, the framework through which he understood himself. Sometimes we can become so accustomed to our pain, our limitations, or our struggles that the thought of genuine healing feels unfamiliar or even frightening. Jesus's question wasn't meant to shame him. It was an invitation to name what he actually wanted, to move from passive suffering toward active hope. Many of us know people (and sometimes ourselves) who have wanted something desperately while also being afraid of it changing. This moment invites us to honestly examine our own hearts: Do we truly want healing, freedom, and wholeness, or are we somehow protected by staying as we are?
