John 5:13

But he who was healed didn’t know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a crowd being in the place.

What does John 5:13 mean?

A man who'd been sick for thirty-eight years had just been healed by Jesus at a pool in Jerusalem, but in all the commotion and crowd, he never actually found out who had helped him. Jesus had quietly slipped away before the man even knew his name. It's a strange detail that John includes, but it points to something real about encountering God's grace: sometimes we experience his work in our lives before we fully understand who he is or what's happening. The man was whole, he was changed, and yet his knowledge came later. For anyone who's felt healed or helped in ways they didn't immediately understand, this moment captures that disorientation and also that odd gift of being transformed first, questions answered after.
