What does John 4:54 mean?

This verse marks the healing of the official's son as Jesus's second recorded miracle in John's gospel, and it's placed deliberately after Jesus had traveled from Judea back to Galilee. John is keeping careful count of these signs, not because he's listing every miracle Jesus performed, but because each one is meant to deepen our trust in who he is. The fact that this healing happened at a distance, simply through Jesus's word, makes it particularly striking: the official didn't need to see Jesus touch his son or perform any visible ritual. It's a sign that calls us to believe in Jesus's power and care even when we can't see the outcome ourselves.
