“Jesus therefore said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders, you will in no way believe.””
What does John 4:48 mean?
Jesus speaks these words to a royal official who has come desperately asking him to heal his dying son. There's a gentle reproach here, not harsh judgment. Jesus is pointing out that many people (including perhaps this official) base their faith primarily on miracles and dramatic evidence rather than on trust in who Jesus is. Yet what's remarkable is that Jesus helps anyway. He heals the boy, and the official does come to believe. The deeper invitation in Jesus's words is to consider what kind of faith lasts: the kind built on witnessed miracles can fade, but faith rooted in relationship with Jesus himself runs deeper. If you're struggling to believe right now, Jesus doesn't turn you away for needing reassurance. He meets you where you are, even as he gently points toward a stronger foundation.
