John 4:42

They said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of your speaking; for we have heard for ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world.”

What does John 4:42 mean?

The people of Samaria are telling the woman at the well that while her testimony about Jesus moved them to curiosity, their real faith comes from encountering Jesus directly themselves. They're saying that hearing her story was a starting point, but actually meeting Jesus and experiencing who he is transformed their belief from secondhand into genuine conviction. There's something deeply encouraging here: it suggests that faith isn't fragile or dependent on perfect witnessing, but that Jesus himself has a way of making himself known when people are open to meeting him. If you've ever felt like your own faith needed to move beyond someone else's experience to become truly yours, this moment captures that important shift toward personal relationship with God.
