John 4:25
“The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah comes, he who is called Christ. When he has come, he will declare to us all things.””
What does John 4:25 mean?
The Samaritan woman at the well has just had her deepest secrets exposed by Jesus, and instead of running away ashamed, she's drawn into something bigger. She recognizes that Jesus is speaking with an authority that seems to come from God himself, so she reaches for the one hope her people held onto: the coming Messiah who would explain everything and set things right. What's beautiful here is that she's essentially saying, "I don't understand what's happening, but I know someone is coming who will make sense of it all." She's admitting her confusion while clinging to faith, which is honest spiritual longing. In the next verse, Jesus responds simply: "I who speak to you, I am he." He doesn't wait for some future moment to reveal truth, but offers himself as the answer to her deepest questions right there, in that ordinary conversation by a well. This matters for anyone who feels lost or confused about God. Sometimes we think we need to have everything figured out before we can encounter Jesus, but this woman shows us that coming as we are—bewildered, broken, searching—is exactly where real faith begins.
