What does John 4:13 mean?
Jesus is speaking to a woman at a well in Samaria, and he's using water as a picture of something deeper. When he says everyone who drinks from this physical well will get thirsty again, he's pointing to a truth we all recognize: temporary things satisfy us only temporarily. A drink of water meets an immediate need, but thirst returns. He's gently inviting her to think beyond surface-level solutions to the longing that keeps coming back. This applies to so many ways we try to fill the empty places in ourselves—success, relationships, possessions, distraction—all of which eventually leave us feeling the same hunger again. Jesus is building toward the idea that he offers something fundamentally different, something that genuinely satisfies the deepest part of who we are.
