John 4:10
“Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.””
What does John 4:10 mean?
Jesus is speaking to a woman at a well in Samaria, someone considered an outcast by her community. Instead of answering her question directly, he's inviting her to see beyond the surface of their encounter. He's suggesting that if she truly understood who he was and what God offers through him, she wouldn't be focused on physical water at all, but would be asking him for something far more life-giving. "Living water" is his way of describing spiritual renewal, healing, and a relationship with God that actually satisfies the deepest longings of the heart. Notice that he doesn't shame her or demand anything from her, even though she's shown surprise at him speaking to her. Instead, he's gently pointing out that what she really needs, what we all really need, is available to her if she's willing to ask. This moment becomes a turning point in her understanding of who Jesus is.
