What does John 3:27 mean?

John the Baptist is answering some of his followers who've come to him upset that Jesus is baptizing people and drawing crowds. They're worried about losing their influence. John reminds them of a basic truth: no one accomplishes anything entirely on their own, and no authority or success comes apart from God's hand in it. There's real comfort here if you're struggling with envy or feeling like your gifts don't measure up. It means you're not competing for a limited supply of talent or opportunity. Whatever you've been given, whatever influence or ability you have, comes from above. That takes the pressure off trying to manufacture your own significance and invites you to steward what's actually yours to steward.
