What does John 3:14 mean?
Jesus is drawing a direct line between an Old Testament story and his own coming death. In Numbers 21, when poisonous snakes attacked the Israelites in the desert, God told Moses to make a bronze serpent and lift it up on a pole, so anyone bitten could look at it and be healed. Jesus says he will be "lifted up" in the same way, referring to his crucifixion, and just as that serpent brought physical healing, his death on the cross brings spiritual healing and salvation to all who look to him in faith. It's a profound image of how Jesus became the remedy for what ails humanity, transforming death itself into the source of our redemption.
