“Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen, and have believed.””
What does John 20:29 mean?
Jesus speaks these words to Thomas, who doubted the resurrection until he saw the risen Jesus with his own eyes. Rather than condemning Thomas for needing proof, Jesus gently acknowledges his faith, then shifts to something deeper: he pronounces a special blessing on those who believe without seeing. This isn't meant to make you feel bad if you struggle with doubt or wish for clearer signs of God's presence. Instead, Jesus is affirming that trust built on faith itself, without requiring miracles or undeniable evidence, is a profound and beautiful thing. Many of us believe in God through Scripture, through the witness of others, through changed lives, or through the quiet work of the Spirit in our hearts, not through direct encounter. Jesus says that kind of faith is blessed.
