John 2:14
“He found in the temple those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, and the changers of money sitting.”
What does John 2:14 mean?
Jesus walks into the temple courtyard and sees merchants conducting business, selling animals for sacrifice and exchanging currency. This was technically allowed under Jewish law, since pilgrims coming from far away needed to purchase animals for offerings and had to exchange foreign money into temple currency. But Jesus found something deeply wrong with the scene, and his reaction in the verses that follow shows he saw this commerce as corrupting the purpose of God's house. The temple had become a marketplace rather than a place of genuine worship and prayer. Sometimes when we encounter injustice or misplaced priorities, it's worth asking what Jesus saw that troubled him so much.
