What does John 19:39 mean?

Nicodemus was a Pharisee who had visited Jesus secretly before, uncertain and cautious about his faith. Now, after Jesus' crucifixion, he shows up openly at the tomb with an enormous quantity of expensive spices, a gesture of deep honor and respect for the dead. The amount he brings (about a hundred pounds) suggests both his wealth and the profound shift in his courage: he's no longer hiding in the dark. This is a quiet but powerful moment of someone moving from secret belief into public devotion, even when it cost him.
