What does John 19:36 mean?
John is pointing to something remarkable: even in Jesus's crucifixion, God's ancient promises held true. This reference goes back to Psalm 34:20 and also echoes instructions about the Passover lamb, whose bones were never to be broken. When Roman soldiers came to break the legs of those crucified (a brutal practice to hasten death), they found Jesus already dead and left his body unbroken. For John and the early believers, this wasn't coincidence but confirmation that Jesus was the fulfillment of everything Scripture had promised. It's a quiet way of saying that even in suffering and death, God's word proves faithful and the deepest patterns of faith find their meaning in Jesus.
