“Therefore the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who was crucified with him;”
What does John 19:32 mean?
During crucifixion, a slow death from suffocation could take hours or even days. When the soldiers needed to speed up the process (likely because the Sabbath was approaching), they broke the legs of the condemned men, making it impossible to push themselves up to breathe. This was a brutal but merciful end to their suffering. What makes this moment significant is that when the soldiers came to Jesus, they found he had already died, so they didn't break his legs, which the Gospel writer connects to Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah's bones not being broken.
