John 19:15
“They cried out, “Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar!””
What does John 19:15 mean?
In this moment, the religious leaders of Jerusalem are rejecting Jesus completely and publicly. When Pilate sarcastically asks if he should crucify their king, the chief priests respond by declaring their allegiance to the Roman emperor instead, which is a stunning reversal since they had always taught that God alone was Israel's true king. Their words reveal the depth of their opposition to Jesus and show how far they were willing to go to reject him, even if it meant contradicting their own faith's core message. For many of us reading this today, it's a sobering reminder of how people can turn away from truth when it threatens their power or comfort.
