What does John 18:28 mean?
The religious leaders have arrested Jesus and brought him to Caiaphas for questioning, but now they need Roman authority to carry out a death sentence. So they drag him to the Praetorium, the Roman governor's headquarters, early in the morning. Here's where the irony cuts deep: these same leaders refuse to set foot inside a pagan building because they're concerned about ceremonial purity before eating the Passover meal, the very meal commemorating God's liberation of Israel. They're so careful about following rules that they won't enter a Roman building, yet they're about to execute an innocent man. John is showing us how easy it is to get caught up in religious details while missing what God actually cares about, which is justice and mercy. The scene reminds us that sometimes the greatest violations of faith happen not through breaking rules, but through keeping them so rigidly that we lose sight of compassion.
